While there are many different varieties of guns in existence, it is good to know some very simple gun anatomy that will translate to almost all firearms. Below is some basic information to help familiarize the anatomy of a gun.

The Barrel
In most basic terms, the barrel is the tube in which the bullet travels to exit the gun. They are typically made of metal -early europeans used wrought iron. The earliest form of gunpowder projectile weapons were made with bamboo because of its natural tubular shape.

The Hammer
The hammer of a gun is the mechanism which strikes the firing pin of a bullet, igniting the charge and propelling the bullet out of the gun. In some guns (such as a single-action revolver), the hammer must be pulled back manually to turn the cylinder and ready the bullet.

The Grip
On a handgun, the grip is the part of the gun that is held. The same hand that holds the grip will also pull the trigger. Holding a gun properly is the one of the most important steps in gun safety, so be sure that you always maintain a steady hold on the grip.

The Trigger
The trigger of a gun is basically a level that causes the firing sequence. It is commonly deployed by the index finger of the hand holding the grip. The trigger is a striking device, not a hammer, meaning it is a spring loaded firing pin that can sometimes eliminate the need of a separate hammer.

The Trigger Guard
The trigger guard delivers what it promises – it guards the trigger from accidental discharge. It is highly recommended that guard never be removed unless it is necessary.

The Front and Rear Sights
The sights on a gun are very important when aiming your gun. Typically made of metal, sights assist in aiming and are usually not adjustable. When the sights are aligned while aiming at a target, you are more likely to hit the target in question.
